"The Whole Child" bookazine highlights The American Legion's commitment to children and youth from its beginning. Stability at home, health and safety, character and opportunity are principles that continue to guide The American Legion’s Children & Youth Committee, which works to improve the lives of young people who need assistance most, no matter their conditions or circumstances.
The bookazine highlights ways The American Legion supports children and youth, through its Temporary Financial Assistance program, Child Welfare Foundation and other advocacy efforts, and the impact had at the local, state and national level.
For example, the Child Welfare Foundation has awarded $20,683,892 in grants since the program’s inception in 1954. These grants are awarded to nonprofits that contribute to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual welfare of children and youth. And the Temporary Financial Assistance program has provided more than $18 million in cash grants to ensure that qualified military and veteran families with minor children at home can pay for food, shelter, clothing or other necessities when sudden, unexpected financial hardships strike.
