Community service is an activity of The American Legion USA 250 Challenge to celebrate the nation’s birthday.

Community service is an activity of The American Legion’s USA 250 Challenge. The challenge is a yearlong celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday where participants can individually, or as part of a team, engage in one or all three of the categories – fitness, mental wellness and community service – to track and complete 250 miles or hours.

As the holidays draw near, American Legion members are preparing to host community dinners, purchase Christmas toys for children in need, send care packages to deployed troops or deliver baked goods to veterans in nursing homes. These acts of service can go toward community service hours for the challenge.

For example, American Legion Family of Veterans Memorial Post 347 in Lady Lake, Fla., community service project for the challenge is to partner with Operation Christmas Child to pack and send 250 Christmas shoeboxes worldwide through Samaritan’s Purse.

Meanwhile, Theresa Montoya, Auxiliary Department of New Mexico public relations and western division legislative chairwoman, plans to conduct USA 250 Challenge community service hours by educating elementary students about America’s 250th birthday and flag etiquette while presenting small U.S. flags. And Legion Family members from the Department of Tennessee’s 1st District picked up trash while including fitness and walking 2.5 miles.
