In support of The American Legion’s Be the One mission to prevent veteran suicide, American Legion posts with a physical address will soon be receiving a toolkit from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) that raises awareness about this important cause.
The American Legion has partnered with NSSF and the AFSP as they share the same mission -- stopping veteran suicide. Together, through the toolkits, the three organizations are committed to educating about warning signs associated with suicide, how to reach out when someone is struggling, knowing the Veterans Criss Line (988 and press 1), and understanding the importance of securely storing firearms and other lethal means.
These toolkits will include Be the One, NSSF and AFSP materials for your post and community members to develop an understanding of suicide and how to recognize and assist individuals who are going through a hard time. Be the One materials will include information on free online suicide prevention training, resources and more.
Prior to partnering with The American Legion, the NSSF has distributed nearly 13,000 toolkits as part of its “Have a Brave Conversation” suicide prevention campaign. The toolkit originally was developed by NSSF and AFSP for use by firearm retailers and shooting ranges to educate their staff and customers about mental health and suicide prevention. Now, the toolkit includes Be the One materials. Posts are encouraged to share the materials with members and the community.
