The guide to writing and submitting a resolution is online at legion.org/publications.
American Legion members can impact the priorities and positions of The American Legion through a resolution – a position-driven initiative written by members and put to a vote. American Legion resolutions, dating back to 1919, passed by the National Executive Committee are housed in the Digital Archive at https://archive.legion.org/.
Resolutions can support a statement of position on veteran issues, congressional legislation or matters at the Departments of Veterans Affairs; recognize an individual or organization; create, change or support programs of The American Legion; and more.
To get started on writing a resolution, read the newly updated Resolution Booklet found under General on the Publications page.
The booklet has been developed to assist American Legion staff and volunteers to be as consistent as possible in composing and writing resolutions. This booklet does not replace rules and regulations adopted by posts or departments; rather, it is designed to offer guidance on established norms.
The booklet features:
What a resolution is
How to get started writing a resolution
How to submit a resolution
Understand and use of the Whereas and Resolved clauses
What to do after your post adopts a resolution
Resolution format examples
A resolution checklist
