The Legion’s American Education Week brochure provides ways posts can support youth throughout the week, Nov. 11-17.

The National Education Association’s (NEA) 91st American Education Week is Nov. 11-17. American Legion posts and family members are encouraged to participate in the weeklong celebration to support America’s youth and the NEA’s annual tagline, “Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility.”  For examples of ways to get involved, download the Legion’s 2012 American Education Week brochure here.

A few of the many ideas featured in the brochure include to:
• Decorate store windows with Americanism and Legion youth program items;
• Provide a speaker and a program for the students on Veterans Day, Nov. 11;
• Exhibit student work and special projects within the post; and
• Volunteer during a school’s open house and distribute American Legion youth materials.

Meanwhile, the NEA’s American Education Week features a special observance for each day. They are:
• Nov. 12 Veterans Day
• Nov. 13 Parents Day
• Nov. 14 Education Support Professionals Day
• Nov. 15 Educator for a Day
• Nov. 16 Substitute Educators Day

The American Legion has played a significant rule in the history of American Education Week, being a co-sponsor of the initial event, Dec. 4-10, 1921. Read more about the Legion’s involvement with the history of American Education Week here.
