National commander expresses Legion support for flag-protection amendment

Legislation introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would protect U.S. flag from physical desecration.

On June 13, U.S. Rep. Steve Womak introduced legislation in the House of Representatives that protects the U.S. flag from physical desecration though a constitutional amendment. A companion joint resolution in the Senate is being led by U.S. Senator Steve Daines.

American Legion National Commander James LaCoursiere Jr. expressed the organization’s support for the legislation through the following statement:

“The American Legion has a deep and profound respect for the American flag. All our members swore on their lives to protect the flag and uphold what it stands for. The American people also treasure Old Glory, and how it signifies democracy. They do not want to see the flag desecrated. The time has come for Congress to protect the flag through an amendment to the U.S. Constitution.”
