The American Legion has added to its portfolio of educational flag materials the “Rise of Our Flag” graphic novel. Perfect for junior high school readers and older, the 65-page “Rise of Our Flag” illustrates the journey of American’s symbol from its origins in the War of 1812 to the 21st century, where it has remained a beacon of hope following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
It also features a guide to the U.S. Flag Code, illustration of Legionnaires conducting a flag retirement ceremony, and historic moments from the flag on the moon to the Olympics.

The graphic novel was illustrated by U.S. Army Sgt. Austin Powell during his time in the American Legion-supported DoD SkillBridge program. It is now included in other American Legion young adult and youth flag education materials available for purchase:
