Alaska post holds marksmanship event, gets community involved.
On Saturday, May 14, Joseph T. Craig American Legion Post 3 in Ketchikan, Alaska, held its second annual Charity Marksmanship Challenge. Fifteen competitors – up from 10 in 2021 – competed in rifle and pistol courses. And an additional contest, for children, was added by Sons of The American Legion Squadron 3 by public request, in which seven participated. Ketchikan is home to a Coast Guard base, and the event was a way to engage with their members, according to Post Commander Daniel Jones. He continued, “Here in Alaska, firearms and firearms training are a way of life. We saw an opportunity to bring the public and the active-duty military component together for a day of competition and fellowship. This also gave many members in the community an opportunity to show their support for our vets.” Over $5,000 worth of items was raffled off, donated from Ketchikan, the United States and even Germany. The local gun range donated supplies; a local blacksmith made the steel targets. While Post 3 does not currently have a Junior Shooting Sports program, Jones said, “it is a subject we have discussed at numerous meetings lately.”
