‘Contemplations Moral and Divine’ to be raffled off to raise money for community service.

Allen "Pop" Reeves Post 123 in Angeles City, Philippines, recently made an appearance on a popular YouTube channel and promoted a raffle soon to be held of a donated 300-plus-year-old book.

In June, lifestyle vlogger Chubs DubC visited the post home, where he received a tour from Legion officers and sat down with them for further discussion. During this, the officers brought out a book given to them for a fundraising raffle. Bill Cooper, who donated the book, told The American Legion via email that while working in Malaysia when flights resumed after the COVID-19 pandemic, he met a veteran in Angeles City who invited him to Sunday night BBQ at Post 123. “I had a great time and made some nice friends,” he said. He continued to visit the post when he was in the city, and moved there permanently in May after his retirement.

Many of the post’s activities revolve around its canteen/kitchen, filled with Legion memorabilia; the money made goes to support efforts such as benefits for veterans and widows, as well as a nearby orphanage, and proceeds from the raffle will go to those same causes.

“Contemplations Moral and Divine,” by Sir Matthew Hale – “late Chief Justice of the King’s Bench” – is a religious book originally purchased by Cooper for his mother in England 30 years ago. After she passed away last Christmas, he found it among her belongings. His affinity with America and its citizens is not new – he lived there for 15 years, married an American woman and has an American daughter. He decided on his donation because, he said, “I am so impressed with what Post 123 does for the community – such hard-working nice guys.”
