The future of the monthly IRLP net.
Overall, the monthly nets conducted by TALARC have been doing OK for the more than four years they've been on the air. There is one exception, however, and that's the IRLP net, which runs every second Saturday of the month on IRLP Node 9735. For the last six or seven months, this net has been steadily "fading." The number of check-ins have been, typically, three or four per net; and it has been the same amateurs checking in each time. This, then, brings the question of continuing the IRLP net.
There's a lot to be said for IRLP, but like any other mode of communication it has its shortcomings. On the good side, the signal is almost always clean and clear, and the QRM/QRN is virtually nil. On the flip side of IRLP, probably the most tormenting issue is the inability of callers to reach an IRLP repeater in their area that will enable them to connect up to the 9735 node at Indianapolis.
With all this information in mind, it seems it is time to discontinue the monthly IRLP net, and the TALARC board has determined that it will continue through until December and then be terminated.
If anyone has strong feelings about IRLP and would like to see it continue, please let the board know by contacting us at k9tal@legion.org.
