Item: Reminder – Legion Birthday Special Event – March 9
The next Special Event Station operation will commemorate the 100th "birthday" of The American Legion on Saturday, March 9, 2019, from 1300 to 1900 EST [1800Z-2359Z].
Call sign for the event will be K9TAL. Information on modes and frequencies is on the Legion website atwww.legion.org/hamradio, and on the K9TAL page of the QRZ.com website. Because of this special event, the regular Saturday nets – EchoLink and 20 meters – will not operate on that day, but will return to their normal schedule in April.
Item: Legion Radio Club newsletter for March
In this month’s edition of the TALARC newsletter, Vice President Bill, NZ9S, has some interesting numbers on growth of TALARC and that of amateur radio as a whole.
The newsletter is issued from Legion National Headquarters monthly, normally during or just before the first full week of the month.
If you aren’t getting the newsletter regularly, or if you know a Legion radio club member who isn’t receiving it, go to “TALARC Contacts” on the club website at www.legion.org/hamradio. Provide the requested information and in the message box, ask to be placed on the club newsletter mailing list.
Item: New EchoLink net is off to a great start
Last month a new nationwide net was added to Legion net operations. The *TALARC* EchoLink Conference net debuted on Feb. 13 with a dozen or so check-ins from all around. Over and above its monthly net operations, the *TALARC* EchoLink Conference node operates continuously, courtesy of net control station operator Shannon, W6SPY, and the Idaho Post 155 Amateur Radio Club, call sign N7ALR, which sponsors the node. In a follow-up report, Shannon noted that since starting up, everything is running smoothly. He says he has 6 to 8 hams visit each day for varied lengths of time.
This conference node is available for use by Legion radio club members for casual QSOs, or it can be made available to American Legion amateur radio clubs that may wish to begin scheduled EchoLink net operations on the Post 155 node.
Clubs that are interested should contact Shannon and Post 155 for coordination and details through k9tal@legion.org; or visit the *TALARC* EchoLink Conference node during their regularly scheduled nets each 2nd Wednesday of the month at 9 pm Pacific time.
In this digital age there are numerous modes of communication available to us. EchoLink offers one that is easy to use, requires no special equipment, is free and can be accessed by any ham, Novice to Extra. All it requires is a valid FCC license, your call sign and a smartphone. And it runs equally well on tablets and PCs. Information about EchoLink is atwww.echolink.org.
