Item: American Legion National Officers in place for the 2019-2020 Legion Year
James W. "Bill" Oxford was elected national commander of The American Legion on Aug. 29, 2019, in Indianapolis, during the organization's 101st national convention. He has been a member of the nation's largest veterans organization since 1986.
A native of Lenoir, N.C., Oxford is a paid-up-for-life member and past commander of Post 29 in Lenoir. He served as department (state) commander of the North Carolina American Legion from 2010 to 2011.
A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Oxford was an aviation electronic technician for the A-6 Intruder and served in Vietnam during his initial enlistment. After being discharged as a sergeant in 1970, he joined the North Carolina National Guard. He subsequently attended officer's candidate school and transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve, where he retired as a colonel after more than 34 years of military service.
For information about others elected and appointed at the national convention, visit the Legion website at www.legion.org.
Item: Special Event operations at National Convention
The thanks of the TALARC Board of officers goes to the Henry Bergdorff Post 155 American Legion Amateur Radio Club, call sign N7ALR. The Idaho post and its Club Trustee Shannon, W6SPY, made possible the 5-day special event that was conducted on their *TALARC* EchoLink node during the Legion’s 101st National Convention.
While the contacts weren’t as numerous as hoped, we did reach about 100 amateurs, stateside and overseas, and had the opportunity to talk with them about the Legion and its amateur radio program. If you were able to reach us during convention you will receive in the mail a special “100th Anniversary” QSL card. Give us a couple of weeks for the dust to settle from the convention, and we’ll get those cards out.
REMINDER: American Legion membership eligibility dates revised
Action by the United States Congress in July has changed membership eligibility dates for The American Legion.
Public Law 116-35, “The LEGION Act,” fills in the gaps of war eras and redefines The American Legion’s membership eligibility dates, beginning with the bombing of Pearl Harbor and continuing until it is determined the United States is no longer in a state of war.
Those who have served federal active duty in the United States Armed Forces since December 7, 1941, and have been honorably discharged or are still serving, are eligible for membership in The American Legion.
Because eligibility dates remain open, all active- duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.
