TALARC D-STAR NET REPORT – 03 Aug 2020
TALARC D-STAR NET REPORT – 03 Aug 2020
Station W4CDA conducted the monthly net on Reflector 056C on Monday, 03 Aug 2020. The net began at 8 p.m. EST with Ken (KY4KD) acting as Net Control. There were 31 total check-ins, including Net Control, from eight states. Due to the restrictions mandated by COVID-19, this net was not conducted from American Legion Post 46 in Danville, Ky. Ken (KY4KD) conducted the net singlehandedly from his home QTH. For the same reason, our veterans after-net had not been held, but starting this month it was held using Zoom video between the Post 46 service officer and Net Control.

Item: National Commander’s Updates
On a frequent basis, American Legion National Commander Bill Oxford offers his “National Commander’s Update” to members via the Legion website [www.legion.org]. Here are several items he shared in late July and early August.
2 August 2020 Thirty years ago today the nation of Iraq invaded the nation of Kuwait. The sequence of events led to the Gulf War and a new chapter in U.S. military history. The American Legion will forever remember the service and sacrifices made by those who served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. God Bless our Gulf War veterans.
31 July 2020 Last year The American Legion was proud to invite the president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, to address delegates at our national convention. It was just another chapter in our longstanding and warm relationship with this close ally.
I want to once again thank Taiwan for its recent donation of 250,000 medical masks presented to The American Legion on July 28.
The masks are the kind of gifts that can save the lives of veterans and others who are especially vulnerable to the novel coronavirus.
30 July 2020 Alaska is remote from the rest of our states, but Legionnaires at Post 5 in Seward are very connected to their community. The American Legion Family there has provided substantial food donations and face masks to those in need since the middle of March. In addition to free breakfasts for the community’s front-line workers, the post has provided curbside dinners to members and those in need.
“I think our community partners … have begun to realize the potential of what we at Seward Post 5 can do to help,” said Post Commander Clare Sullivan.
Great job, Post 5, of providing some northern exposure Legion-style!
28 July 2020 The names etched on the National Vietnam War Memorial are to be forever remembered but they are not complete. Veterans continue to lose their lives as a result of their Vietnam War service. The American Legion welcomes the measure passed by the U.S. Senate last week which would add bladder cancer, hypothyroidism and Parkinson’s Disease to the 14 illnesses already covered by the Department of Veterans Affairs for illnesses connected to Agent Orange exposure. Earlier this year, I signed a joint letter with other Veteran Service Organizations encouraging the passage of this amendment. We owe it to the heroes who are still paying a price from their service half a century ago.
