Net Control Station W9MNA, (Mike), conducted the monthly net on EchoLink CROSSRDS Conference node The Family Motor Coach Association Amateur Radio Chapter, on Saturday, May 9, 2020. We had six (6) check-ins from members around the country. We also had a new check-in. The net operated for 55 minutes.
Don’t forget: we conduct this net every second Saturday of the month at noon ET (1200). Please join us on June 13 for the next EchoLink net.

The following are the check-ins for the May 9 EchoLink network.

W9MNA, Mike, Net Control

KB3IIE – Ken, Maryland, Post 275
WA3DVO – Everett, Maryland, Post 275
KB3ZCO – Mike, Maryland, Post 275, first time check-in
KC6UIS – Bob, California, Post 283
KN4FCV - Owen, VA
AC8AL – Richard, Florida

Mike KB3ZCO mentioned that the TALARC members at Glenarden, Md., Post 275 have been conducting meeting nets for the past couple of months due to the COVID-19 virus. They help in that their members can stay in touch and maintain their social distancing.

KC6UIS, Bob, at Post 283 mentioned that their post has been successfully doing American Legion business via Zoom conferencing. He says so far, so good in California.

Ken KB3IIE reported that American Legion members of Post 275 in Glenarden participated in a food distribution event in Prince Georges’ County.

WA3DVO Everett, also from Glenarden, mentioned that the post’s TALARC station will conduct a special event station, N3V, in July. The SE is to commemorate a “Peace Cross” memorial in Bladensburg, Md. He also reported that they plan on doing PE testing in July. However, this may or may not happen depending on social distancing rules and guidelines. He also mentioned that, from what he knows, the FCC has relaxed testing rules and allows remote testing. However, he needs to look into that to make sure he’s following the FCCs guidelines.

Net control also brought up the topic of satellite operations by individuals. Mike KB3ZCO discussed trying to communicate with the International Space Station (ISS). The problem he had was the fact that the ISS seems to be more interested in communicating with school and school-age children during their amateur radio time schedule. So, contacting ISS didn’t happen. Mike also talked about trying his hand at satellite operations, but he’s still in the learning and research stages of Satellite Ops.
