A 2.5 and 5K run/walk will start and end at the Hillsdale post with funds benefitting firefighters.

American Legion Leighr A. Wright Post 53 in Hillsdale, Mich., is hosting a “Running for Heroes” 2.5 and 5K on Saturday, Sept. 11, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The event will raise money for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which honors the sacrifice of New York Firefighter Stepher Siller who lost his life to save others on Sep. 11, 2001, as well as for the Hillsdale County Fire Association.

“I can’t think of two better organizations to rally around and raise funding for on such an impactful day in many of our lives,” said Second Vice Commander Corey Murray in the Hillsdale Daily News. “Our firefighters and veterans running together with community members to honor the men and women who died on that tragic September day and in the wars that followed.”

The run/walk will start and end at Post 53, 1611 Steamburg Road in Hillsdale.

Those wishing to participate should register online prior to the event by visiting the American Legion Post 53 Running for Heroes Facebook page. Or by calling (517) 273-1311. A $25 registration fee with discounts for firefighters, police officers, veterans, students and seniors is available.

Immediately following the run/walk, a ceremony will take place at the post where a wreath will be laid near a fallen warriors memorial and fallen firefighters memorial on display.

“The community is invited to attend the ceremony, even if not participating in the 2.5 and 5K events, to stand side by side with our veterans and firefighters as we pay tribute to our fallen brothers and sisters,” Murray said. “‘We will never forget’ was more than just a rally cry in the months following the 9/11 attacks.”
