Friends of memorial conducting June 6 event.
On Monday, June 6, the Friends of the National World War II Memorial will pay tribute to the more than 2 million Allied servicemembers who took part in Operation Overlord, and will commemorate the more than 225,000 Allies who were killed, wounded or missing during the operation – including the 9,000 who became casualties on D-Day – with a special ceremony at the memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
World War II veterans and other dignitaries will place wreaths at the Atlantic Arch of the memorial. The Military District of Washington will provide support, including an Armed Forces Color Guard, an Army brass quintet, and an Army Band bugler to sound taps at the conclusion of the ceremony.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Eastern. It is open to the public, but registration is preferred. The ceremony will also be streamed live via the Friends’ Facebook page.
