The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor museum in New York shares the journey of the Purple Heart and the stories of its recipients.
About 60 miles north of Manhattan, N.Y., is the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor, where the stories of Purple Heart recipients are told. Visitors to the museum experience the Purple Heart Journey and stories of recipients through video interactives, exhibits, artifacts and the Roll of Honor – an electronic database of Purple Heart recipients from the Civil War through today. The database can be accessed at six interactive computer kiosk at the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Museum and online through its website, thepurpleheart.com/.
The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor does not have access to the names of every Purple Heart recipient “as there is no comprehensive list” its website states, and the museum does not receive notification when a Purple Heart is awarded. Enrollment in the Roll of Honor is voluntary and is often done by Purple Heart recipients, their families or friends. See the current Purple Heart Roll of Honor.
If you don’t see the name you are looking for in the Roll of Honor, learn more about the enrollment process here. When submitting an enrollment application, the museum is looking for photographs, telegrams, letters home or other materials that help tell the story of the Purple Heart recipient.
The Purple Heart Hall of Honor is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
