American Legion Family members encouraged to share their Patriot Day plans. A downloadable speech is available to assist those efforts.
This Sept. 11 marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, as well as downing of United Flight 93 in Somerset Co., Pa., when the plane’s passengers attempted to overcome four hijackers. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost over the three locations.
It’s a moment in America’s history that the American Legion Family continues to remember and ensure that their community never forgets the lives lost that day or the more than 7,000 U.S. servicemembers lost fighting in the global war on terrorism following the attacks.
For over two decades, American Legion posts have conducted ceremonies on 9/11 to ensure that their communities don’t forget the lives lost that day or those lost while fighting the global war on terrorism prompted by the attack. The American Legion wants to hear how posts are remembering the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11.

A few events already scheduled:
· In Cadott, Wis., Henry P. Svetlik Post 159 is sponsoring a community memorial event at 7:45 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the Wisconsin Veterans Tribute that will include a moment of silence, community readings and a flag tribute.
· In Elizabethton, Tenn., Watauga Post 49 is teaming with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2166 to host a remembrance event at 4 p.m. on Sept. 11.
· In Worthington, Ohio, Leasure-Blackston American Legion Post 239 is teaming with the city to present Worthington's Patriot Day ceremony at noon Sept. 11. Volunteers will place 2,977 small U.S. flags on the Village Green as part of the commemoration.
