American Legion members respond to call, pressure Congress to eliminate the “offset” that penalizes some disabled veterans.
American Legion National Commander Dan K. Wiley personally delivered signed petitions from Legionnaires on Nov. 12 to Capitol Hill calling for Congress to pass the Major Richard Star Act.
“American Legion Family members — you are the power behind our voice on Capitol Hill,” Wiley said as he dropped off some of the 8,740 petitions. “Our injured servicemembers should not lose their full retirement pay because of a disability they sustained while protecting our nation. Correcting that injustice is a priority for The American Legion. And Legionnaires from every state are making their voice heard.”
The petitions say in part, “It is an injustice that our combat-injured (and often seriously disabled) veterans are subject to their retirement pay being reduced for every dollar of disability received.”
The Richard Star Act would correct this injustice by allowing combat-injured veterans to receive their due compensation. It would eliminate the current "offset" system, where a veteran's retirement pay is reduced for every dollar of VA disability compensation they receive.
