Members of the Washington American Legion Family delegation meet with U.S. Rep. Adam Smith during the Washington Conference.

We want to highlight Legion Family advocacy efforts during the recent Washington Conference.

During the recent Washington Conference, members of the Department of Washington American Legion Family were able to discuss veterans issues during their visit to Capitol Hill on March 4.

Members of Washington’s delegation met with U.S. Rep. Adam Smith’s Legislative Assistant for Veterans Affairs, Michelle Fowler, while Smith was in the middle of a House of Representatives vote and attending various Operation Epic Fury meetings in his role as Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee. Smith met with the delegation briefly afterwards and thanked everyone not only for their visit, but for their advocacy throughout the week on behalf of the nation’s veterans and America’s servicemembers.

Members of the Legion Family present were:

·       National Executive Committeeman Rafael Munoz-Cintron (also a member National Legislative Council)

·       Department Commander Al Jensen (also a member National legislative Commission)

·       Kent Wong, American Legion Cathay Post 186 adjutant

·       David Vinson, American Legion Port Orchard Post 30 adjutant

·       Sylvia Jensen, American Legion Auxiliary member

·       Margarita Casalduc-Munoz, Auxiliary member

·       Legislative Associate Nicholas Ruf, The American Legion National Legislative Division

Munoz-Cintron reported that Smith’s office is in constant communication with members of the department and are always consulting them on veterans issues. At the department’s urging Smith has become cosponsor of several legislative priorities, including H.R. 2605 the Service Dogs Assisting Veterans (SAVES) Act.

Jensen also made an important presentation of the current status of the Major Richard Star Act and the need for support to have this finally approved by Congress and become law.
