2014 national history contest winners announced

More than 40 entries span four categories.

During her report to the National Executive Committee on Oct. 16, new National Historian Sue Mason of Florida announced the winners of the National Post History Contest and National Department History Contest. Post entries had taken the first award at their department conventions earlier in the year, and department entries had been sent directly to National Headquarters. All entries were judged during the Fall Meetings by a panel of past and present department and national historians. A meeting of the NADHAL (National Association of Department Historians of The American Legion) organization, to which the judges belong, was held on Wednesday morning. The 2014 contest winners are:

One-Year Department Narrative History Contest:

  • First Award, Plaque, Department of North Carolina
  • Second Award, Plaque, Department of Indiana
  • Third Award, Plaque, Department of Georgia

One-Year Department Yearbook History Contest:

  • First Award, Plaque, Department of Florida
  • Second Award, Plaque, Department of Ohio
  • Third Award, Plaque, Department of North Carolina
  • Honorable Mention, Department of Missouri
  • Honorable Mention, Department of North Dakota

One-Year Post Narrative History Contest:

  • First Award, Plaque, Pony Express Post 359, St. Joseph, Mo.
  • Second Award, Plaque, The Woodlands Post 305, The Woodlands, Texas Third Award, Plaque, John D. Combo Post 120, Disputanta, Va.
  • Honorable Mention, Berkeley Post 14, Martinsburg, W.Va.

One-Year Post Yearbook History Contest:

  • First Award, Plaque, Alois-Dreikosen Post 469, Marathon, Wis.
  • Second Award, Plaque, Julius L. Shryer Post 430, Durant, Iowa
  • Third Award, Plaque, a tie: Veterans Memorial Post 347, Lady Lake, Fla., and Adams Township Post 553, Toledo, Ohio
  • Honorable Mention, Charles S. Hatch Post 79, Berwick, Maine
  • Honorable Mention, Earl Graham Post 159, Bryan, Texas
