American Legion Family members planning community Thanksgiving assistance encouraged to share their stories.

Thanksgiving is a time when friends and families gather together to celebrate the day. But it’s also a time when American Legion Family members across the nation set aside their own plans to assist others.

Throughout the nation, American Legion posts and their membership will be providing or taking part in community dinners – many for those unable to afford their own Thanksgiving dinners or, in some cases, for those working on Thanksgiving and away from their own friends and families.

The American Legion Department of Kansas already has provided a good example of those efforts. Members of the department’s American Legion Family recently conducted its annual Big Red One Turkey Run. Posts, units, squadrons and chapters from across the state came together to provide uncooked Thanksgiving meals for those in the Soldier Recovery Unit at Fort Riley and their families. The Legion Family members came together Nov. 16, bringing with them turkey dinners to feed hundreds, as well as gift cards.

And so, ahead of the holiday, we’d like to hear if your post, district or department has some kind of Thanksgiving effort planned to assist others. Please email sbrooks@legion.org ahead of time and then remember to share your stories and photos on Legiontown.org.
