American Legion National Commander James LaCoursiere Jr. issues statement about the attack on New Year’s Day and the lives lost and those injured.
“The carnage inflicted by the attack on innocent Americans in New Orleans is yet another reminder that terrorists remain at war with our country. The murderer’s veteran status is not as important as the evil ideology that inspired his vile act. Self-radicalization is a process that can occur in any community and to any demographic.
“The American Legion urges all Americans to remain vigilant. When it comes to public safety, if something doesn’t look right, it probably isn’t right. The cautionary directive, ‘if you see something, say something,’ is as true today as it was during the 9/11 attacks 24 years ago. With more than 12,000 posts throughout our country and overseas, The American Legion has a global presence.
“Through numerous national resolutions, The American Legion encourages all our posts and members to develop emergency response plans and assist the Department of Homeland Security and law enforcement agencies in efforts to enhance community safety.
“As Legionnaires and veterans, we have a special obligation to contact authorities and do everything in our power to see that threats are further investigated and nullified. The American Legion is grateful for the quick life-saving actions taken by the brave first responders in New Orleans. Our prayers, condolences and support are extended to the victims and the families of those impacted by this horrific event.”
