Tango Alpha Lima podcast welcomes Military.com

The American Legion’s Tango Alpha Lima podcast welcomes Hope Seck, the managing editor for Military.com. Seck’s journalism career has taken her to Afghanistan for warzone embeds with Marines and reporting from aboard ships and aircraft carriers.

Seck, who received the 2016 American Legion Fourth Estate Award, recounts her career which began at a small newspaper in North Carolina near Camp Lejeune. “I didn’t know the difference between an officer and an enlisted Marine,” she says with a chuckle. “So I was a fool. But I spent time in the community and learned the Marine culture. And it is a culture like no other.”

That was back in 2009 — “an intense time” — when many Marines were deploying from her community.

Podcast co-host Mark Seavey asks Seck about the progress of potential Medal of Honor recipients Alwyn Cashe and Waverly Woodson, who are both black. There currently is legislation moving forward to award the Medal of Honor to both.

Cashe “is the textbook case, he deserves it,” Seck says.

Woodson, who served in World War II, is known for treating more than 200 fellow soldiers on D-Day despite being wounded himself. Due to the racism of the day, Woodson and other black soldiers did not receive the recognition they deserved.

“There are so many stories that have not been told,” Seck says. “But it’s great that they are coming back to the surface now.”

Seck also addresses other topics including the future of journalism, reporting and podcasting.
