The day was perfect in every way at Andrews Air Force Base on Oct. 7. Forty-five amateur golfers, including ten wounded warriors, enjoyed a 72-degree afternoon under a cobalt-blue Maryland sky during the Legion's third annual Heroes to Hometowns (H2H) Golf Classic. As if playing 18 holes on one of the military's top-notch courses wasn't reward enough, the participants and their sponsors raised $20,000 for The American Legion's Legacy Scholarship fund for children of fallen warriors.
The H2H Golf Classic was created by the Legion's Small Business Task Force in Washington with three goals in mind. Primarily, planners hoped to raise the profile of the Legion family's Heroes to Hometowns initiative. This program develops local community support networks for wounded, ill and injured servicemembers and their families, as they return to civilian life.
Tourney founders also wished to promote a sense of camaraderie among veterans in business and in government with those who are leaving active duty and may need assistance.
Finally, the annual H2H golfing event was specifically designed to raise scholarship funds to benefit children of servicemembers who die while on active duty.
The now well-established Heroes to Hometowns Golf Classic is meeting those goals with the invaluable aid of its corporate sponsors:
