Today marks start of Legiontown Campaign

Sept. 16, designated as American Legion Day, kickoff to campaign for posts to enhance image within their communities.

In 2009, both the Senate and House of Representatives passed resolutions designating Sept. 16 as American Legion Day. In introducing the resolution, Sen. Olympia Snowe said, “I sincerely hope that my colleagues will join me in supporting this well-earned measure, demonstrating our mutual esteem and reverence for this outstanding organization.” For the complete text of Snowe’s introduction, click here.
Although a similar resolution wasn’t passed this year, Legion posts were encouraged to have similar resolutions enacted in their communities. As American Legion Day, today also marks the start of the 2012 Legiontown Campaign. Every fall, the Legiontown campaign serves as a banner under which activities such as fundraisers and welcome-home ceremonies for servicemembers can be more concentrated, and posts can conduct local events to enhance their (and the Legion’s) public image in their communities.
The campaign runs roughly from Sept. 16 through November, Membership Retention Month. The Public Relations Division has put together a kit of booklets and guides to assist posts in putting together their Legiontown campaigns, available to any Legionnaire free of charge. The kit contains a campaign guide with milestones, pointers, checklists and contact information; a PR handbook, applicable year-round for every facet of post operations; a copy of the Four Pillars booklet; a Disaster Preparedness Program booklet; and a general Legiontown booklet with numerous examples of posts’ good deeds. All posts are invited to register on the Legiontown website and share the stories of the good they do and the successes they have, both during the campaign and throughout the year.
