Legion Rider Jay Guild shares details from the Department of Iowa’s inaugural in-state Legacy Run.
Ahead of the 2026 American Legion Legacy Run – which will leave Lincoln, Neb., on Aug. 23 and will arrive at Fort Knox, Ky., on Aug. 27 – we’re featuring the efforts of American Legion departments who staged in-state Legacy Runs. Those efforts provide much-needed financial support for The American Legion Veterans & Children Foundation (VCF).
The VCF provides funding for:
· The Legion’s Temporary Financial Assistance program, which offers grants for the children of military personnel and veterans facing urgent, unexpected hardships.
· The cost of training and accreditation for American Legion claims experts, who provide free representation for veterans and families applying for disability benefits, survivor assistance, GI Bill opportunities and more.
Department of Iowa District 5 American Legion Riders Chairman Jay Guild – a member of Harry L. Anderson Post 34 in Oskaloosa and Davis-Pence Chapter 69 in Osceola – shared the following about the Department of Iowa’s state Legacy Run.
The inaugural Department of Iowa Legacy Ride was on July 11-12. We planned for eight months to get together nine Legion posts, one in each district in the state, to host stops over two days on a 600-mile route with 50 people joining the ride. Four posts even had meals ready for us, and every post had beverages to make sure we didn't get dehydrated in the 90-degree sunny weather we had. We couldn't complain though. Once in the wind all our worries went away.
Through the generosity of the Legion, Auxiliary units, Sons of the Legion, Riders chapters, ride attendees and a few individuals, we collected $9,090 for the Veterans & Children Foundation.
