American Legion rep among those in attendance at POW-MIA update

National Security Director Sean Counihan attends Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency update for families of missing U.S. servicemembers.

On Feb. 21, American Legion National Security Division Director Sean Counihan was among a group representing veteran service organizations who attended the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) update for families of missing personnel in North Charleston, S.C. The updates are designed to keep family members informed of the U.S. government's worldwide mission to account for those still missing and to discuss in detail the latest information available about their specific cases.

At the monthly update meetings, speakers include senior officials, experts and scientists who work in the wide range of tasks associated with the POW/MIA mission. During the meetings, there are formal presentations, question-and-answer sessions, and one-on-one discussions between government officials and family members.

Counihan was among the speakers at the event. “For more than a century, The American Legion has been guided by a simple truth: We do not leave anyone behind,” he said. “That commitment does not end when a conflict ends.  For families still waiting for answers, and for those still missing, this mission remains deeply personal.

“To the professionals of DPAA, thank you for your dedication and your unwavering determination.  To the families of the missing, please know that The American Legion stands with you, always.”

The event was attended by approximately 400 family members who have the opportunity to meet with numerous civilian and military specialists of the government whose expertise includes foreign government negotiation, formulation of national policy, remains recovery and identification, DNA science, archival research and intelligence analysis.
