Pay the Coast Guard, Legion commander implores Congress

National Commander Dan K. Wiley issues statement regarding threats to Coast Guard missing a paycheck.

American Legion National Commander Dan K. Wiley issued the following statement March 12 regarding the threats to U.S. Coast Guard members missing a paycheck.

"The United States Coast Guard is an integral part of our nation’s security. Paid or not, they will remain professional, protecting ports, securing maritime borders, conducting search and rescue missions, and intercepting narcotics and human traffickersBut the Coast Guard members carrying out their missions are facing personal financial uncertainty, making it harder to focus on their missions, because Congress has not completed its most basic responsibility to ensure the government is funded.

Two weeks ago, The American Legion called on Congress to act. While the most recent pay period was covered because of advance planning within the Department of Homeland Security, that temporary measure is not a long-term solution.

The American Legion calls on Congress to end the shutdown immediately and ensure Coast Guard members — and their families — aren’t distracted by financial uncertainty.

We call on the 2.5 million members of the American Legion Family to immediately contact their members of Congress to demand action."
