Numbers are nearly doubled from this time last year.

Registration for the 2025-2026 American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program postal match competition opened Sept. 1, and numbers are nearly doubled from this time last year.

To date, 51 junior shooting clubs have completed registration.

Registration closes Dec. 14. Visit legion.org/jssp-club-registration to register.

The program drummed up excitement at the 2025 American Legion National Convention in Tampa when Legion partner and air rifle company Crosman had a booth in the exhibit hall to give attendees an opportunity to shoot an air rifle and handed out materials on how get involved with the Legion’s Junior Shooting Sports Program.

“I’m guessing we had over 350 conversations at the national convention simply about how to start a program,” said Neal Warnken, the Legion’s Junior 3-Position Air Rifle National Championship assistant match director and competition chairman, and a past Sons of The American Legion national commander.

The American Legion’s air rifle program provides youth competitors an opportunity to test their marksmanship skills in competition with other competitors throughout the nation. The individual tournament has three phases of competition – first round is state championships, second round is qualification for national championships, and third is national championships. The first round and second round of the individual tournament are postal matches, whereas the Legion’s Junior 3-Position Air Rifle National Championship in Hillsdale, Mich., is an individual event that is a shoulder-to-shoulder competition in three positions standing, kneeling and prone.

The team tournament has two phases of competition – first round is state championships, and second round is recognition of top teams in the nation.
