The high school precision and sporter class shooters will compete in Hillsdale, Mich., July 23-25.

The American Legion’s Junior 3-Position Air Rifle National Championship field has been set for competition in Hillsdale, Mich., July 23-25. The 30 high school shooters participated in the American Legion postal match to advance to the championships.

This will be the third time that the tournament is held on the campus of Hillsdale College but the first for the athletes to compete in Hillsdale’s new world class indoor and outdoor shooting range the Nimrod Complex. Located inside the Halter Shooting Sports Education Center, the facility features more than 100 fully electronic shooting lanes, classrooms, lockers, a viewing area, meeting space and more.

On July 23 and 24, participants in both the precision and sporter class will shoot a .177-caliber air rifle in three positions – prone, standing and kneeling – 20 times for each position twice a day. The top eight competitors in both categories will advance to the finals on Saturday, July 25, where each shooter will fire 10 shots standing. A precision and sporter class winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship provided by The American Legion and the Sons of The American Legion. A $1,000 scholarship, provided by the American Legion Auxiliary, will be awarded to the second-place finishers.

The precision and sporter champions will also receive a trip to The American Legion’s 107th National Convention in Louisville, Ky., in late August to be honored alongside other American Legion youth program champions.
