American Legion System Worth Saving visit in June kicks off with a town hall where veterans have the opportunity to discuss their care at the NOLA VA Medical Center.

The American Legion’s System Worth Saving (SWS) team is heading to New Orleans in June to conduct a town hall, meet with local VA staff and work toward solutions to ensure that area veterans are receiving the best health care possible.

All local military veterans are invited to attend the town hall and share their experiences with the VA. During the event, American Legion representatives, VA staff and others will be on hand to address issues and questions raised by veterans related to their health-care experiences at the New Orleans VA Medical Center.

The town hall, which takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. June 9, will be held at American Legion Post 397, 1225 Hickory Ave., New Orleans, LA, 70123. The event is free. No prior registration or RSVP is necessary.

In November 2016, the New Orleans VA hospital reopened 11 years after Hurricane Katrina nearly destroyed the medical center. American Legion Past National Commander William Detweiler, who passed away in 2019, led the fight for the new hospital.

The purpose of the SWS visit is to ensure the promises made as the facility was rebuilt are being carried out today.

Each year, the Legion’s Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Commission conducts a series of site visits to VA medical facilities and regional offices across the country. While on site, American Legion representatives meet with veterans, their families and VA administrators and employees to discuss issues and solutions at each site. These observations are compiled into a System Worth Saving report that is distributed to VA officials, members of Congress and the public.

In 2024, SWS town hall visits were conducted in Phoenix, Albuquerque, N.M.; Tampa, Fla.; and Helena, Mont.
