Dear TALMA members,
I am so pleased with the enhancements that have been made for the second annual American Legion Media Alliance contest. We have more categories, including ones that will provide prizes in the form of Emblem Sales gift certificates to the winners.
Please visit TALMA’s contest web page to review the contest and submit your entries before the deadline of April 15. All entries must have been published during the 2020 calendar year. Once again, the contest is free to all members of TALMA.
We will be adding two special awards, an Innovation Award and a Chairman’s Award.
Innovation Award: This rewards innovation in media. Nominees may submit for this but don't have to for consideration. Judges will consider the award winners and other nominees to select a winner that demonstrated true innovation.
Chairman's Award: A “Best in Show” award. Nominees don't submit specifically for this. The commission considers the award winners and selects one that goes above and beyond the others.
Winners of those categories get a plaque, $50 Emblem Sales credit and a seat on the TALMA task force for the coming year.
Among other upgrades we have made for this year:
- Due to the quality, quantity and diversified mix of entries in the writing category last year, we have expanded it for the 2021 contest. Now judges will consider entries in three separate categories: editorial / news writing; editorial / informational writing; and public relations / community outreach.
- All entries will be submitted and judged electronically, which will expedite the entire process. And it will save you money on mailing the entries. This will also allow the Media and Communications Commission to review and choose the winners, whether we meet in person or virtually for Spring Meetings.
I also wanted to let you know the details for the next training session.
Holly Lewis, a member of American Legion Post 557 in Wintersville, Ohio, and national American Legion Member Engagement & Training Coordinator Michele Emery will be the panelists for our February virtual training. The session, focusing on best practices for holding virtual meetings, will take place at 7 p.m. Eastern Feb. 10. Mark Sutton will be the moderator. Sign up here.
Replays of all previous training sessions are available in TALMA’s private Facebook group.
I look forward to reviewing your entries for the 2021 annual contest. Good luck to everyone!
Sincerely,
Walter Ivie, Chairman, Media & Communications Commission
