Alden Mills shares how to build an unstoppable mindset to achieve your goals on this week’s American Legion Tango Alpha Lima podcast.
Former Navy SEAL Alden Mills finds joy in helping people do more than they originally thought possible. So he’s on a mission to help 100 million people be unstoppable and go after their goals.
Mills is this week’s special guest on The American Legion Tango Alpha Lima podcast where he shares how to build the title of his book, an “Unstoppable Mindset.”
“You are more powerful than you realize. And you can do so much more than you might believe you can at this moment. You define what you can or can’t do,” said Mills, adding that the choice you make will then magnetize to others, which is how his 100 million goal will be achieved.
Defining what you can or can’t do was taught to Mills as a young child that has carried with him in teaching others that they can do more than thought possible. At 12 years old, he was diagnosed with asthma and was told by doctors to lead a sedentary lifestyle. His mom told him otherwise with the words, “No one can define what you can do but you.”
A self-proclaimed goal-setting geek, Mills helps others achieve an unstoppable mindset by asking, “’What are you willing to sacrifice?’ I’m not asking you to give up every Sunday (of watching football) for the next six months. I want you to give up 30 minutes. And I want you to give up something you were used to doing so you can make room for the new thing that’s important in your life.”
To create an unstoppable mindset, Mills asks people to write down weekly “goals” and “tasks” on a notecard or piece of paper. “You’re going to have to start to build a new habit of creating something in your life that you haven’t done before and letting something else go. That is the first step in developing a new behavior that’s going to help you accomplish something new to you. That’s the challenge. This is the whole thing about helping people be unstoppable.”
Mills added that it’s our experiences that give us meaning and an opportunity to learn transformational moments that we adopt as a new behavior and habit to make us better than before.
“A lot of the experiences we had in the miliary were friction experiences – they were frustrating for us, they hurt, they felt like they were huge setbacks. But then we look at that friction and go, hey, wait a minute. Friction is actually where we get forward progress. We need that friction, we need getting out of that comfort zone and all the great people in my life … they put me out of the comfort zone. They challenged me to go further, and I guarantee you that everybody who is listening, you have those same great moments in your life.”
As someone who likes experiences, Mills was asked by the podcast hosts that if he could pick a time and a place to spend one year of his life, where would it be? Listen to find out.
