Guiding veterans to healing and mentoring the next generation

Retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Bart Womack discusses creating an equine therapy facility for veterans with PTSD; mentoring ROTC cadets; his book, “Embedded Enemy,” which is about an insider terrorist attack; and more in this week’s episode of the Tango Alpha Lima podcast.

Retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Bart Womack served for over 29 years as a Ranger instructor, drill sergeant and Sergeant of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Following his military career, he went to Hollywood to work as an actor and military technical adviser for feature film and TV, working alongside the likes of Robert Redford and Peter Berg.

“The military set me up with all the things that I was taught which gave me the confidence that I could do anything,” says Womack, who also trained soldiers in Afghanistan and Nigeria, and still mentors Army ROTC cadets. “In the end, they gave me the confidence that I could do anything.”

Womack, a Bronze Star recipient, shares his story as the special guest on this week’s episode of the Tango Alpha Lima podcast.

A lifelong lover of horses, Womack founded the Armed Forces Equestrian Center, as a way to highlight equine therapy. “I didn’t know the affect they would have on me,” he recalls. “They draw in people very quickly.”

Womack also mentors ROTC cadets. “We think we are getting the ones who understand what the culture will be, our values and learning about them, and ready to establish them. That’s the hope. Does it always catch on? I don’t know if it always catches on.”

A published author of “Embedded Enemy,” he shares a first-hand account as a survivor of the deadly inside threat terrorist attack against the 101st Airborne Division, by a fellow American soldier. His book has been turned into a screenplay to align with studios and filmmakers to create Embedded Enemy the feature film.
