Army veteran walks 1,000 miles in all.
I am a member of Joe Williams Post 55 in Farmer City, Ill. Participation in the American Legion USA 250 Challenge was a privilege and an easy acceptance. The journey started July 4, 2025, and involved walking central Illinois outdoor trails, county roads and community streets. Initially the personal commitment was to walk 250 miles not only in remembrance of the nation's 250 years of freedom but also to recognize fellow unit members from Vietnam.
Soon after starting the initial 250 miles, I found that a college friend, Gordon Johnson (Greer, S.C.), was also participating in the challenge by rowing, so we encouraged each other. During the first stage of walking, a 100-year-old World War II friend asked how I was doing with the Challenge and told me I could do his 250 miles when I was done. (STORY CONTINUES BELOW)
After completing 500 miles, my brother, an Army Reserve veteran, developed inoperable cancer and asked if I could do his miles; anticipating his health, I had already begun. His 250-mile leg was completed on March 15, and he passed on May 1.
After completing 750 miles, why not go for 1,000? So, to round out the USA 250 Challenge, another 250 miles was walked to commemorate all veterans (KIA, MIA, POW, active-duty and reserve). The last mile was done on Memorial Day 2026.
Participation in the Challenge was not only physically healthy but also brought emotional healing. Serving our nation and defending the Constitution was our privilege in protecting something much bigger than ourselves. It was an honor to serve, and it was an honor to participate in remembrance of 250 years of U.S. freedom.
