California and Washington challenge to see which department can register the most participants in celebration of America’s birthday next year.
The American Legion’s USA 250 Challenge celebrates the nation’s 250th birthday next year while supporting physical fitness, mental health and community service. The challenge encourages Legion Family and community members to participate in one, two or all three of these categories while logging 250 miles or hours by July 4, 2026, America’s 250 birthday.
American Legion Department of California Commander David Brambila and Department of Washington Commander Al Jensen put forth a friendly challenge with each other – to see which department can register the most participants for the USA 250 Challenge by Aug. 26, opening ceremonies of the 106th National Convention in Tampa., Fla.
“The USA 250 Challenge is essential to the Department of California because it has the potential to energize our membership, reinforce our commitment to service, and build momentum as we approach the United States’ 250th anniversary,” Brambila said. “It challenges us to be better stewards of our physical and mental health and emphasizes meaningful community service projects. By participating in this challenge, we not only honor our history but also invest in the future of The American Legion and the communities we serve, gaining personal growth, a sense of accomplishment, and a stronger community bond.”
“I looked at this as an excellent opportunity to get all the posts within the department focused on participation in the event. A little challenge is always a good motivator,” Jensen said. “(The USA 250 Challenge) is an excellent idea with the three categories that fit well into what we do as Legion members. Each of the categories can draw from different demographics of our membership, so there is something for everyone. Doing things for our own physical and mental well-being are so important and this just gives another motivation. The community service category covers things that a lot of our members currently do on a regular basis. It is a great way for the Legion to get our names out into the communities.”
Registration for the challenge is $30 and goes toward the Legion’s Veterans & Children Foundation. Register now at legion.org/usa250/challenge. And watch this how-to video tutorial if you need help tracking miles or hours.
While the challenge between the two departments ends Aug. 26, Brambila and Jensen encourages Legion Family members to sign up between now and July 4, 2026, and invite others to do so.
“I hope to see enthusiasm, teamwork, and a shared sense of purpose,” Brambila said about participants of the challenge. “Whether it's signing up new members, renewing current ones, or simply engaging more deeply with the mission of the Legion Family, I want to see our members step up with pride and show what our department can do when we unite around a common goal.”
Jensen said the friendly challenge “was another way to bring everyone together as a department. Show that the Department of Washington is back.”
