We want to know how Legion Family members will be participating in new initiative that encourages better physical and mental health, community service.
On July 3, American Legion National Commander James LaCoursiere Jr. announced a new initiative aimed at celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday; encouraging Legion Family members to improve their physical and mental health; and also fundraising for The American Legion Veterans & Children Foundation (VCF).
Between now and July 4, 2026, American Legion Family members are encouraged to take part in the USA 250 Challenge. The challenge offers three categories — fitness, mental wellness and community service. Participants may engage in one, two or all three activities as an individual or as part of a team, such as an American Legion post, American Legion Auxiliary unit, Sons of The American Legion squadron and/or an American Legion Riders chapter.
For a $30 registration fee, participants will receive their choice of a USA 250 Challenge tech shirt. The proceeds will go to the VCF, which funds both the Legion’s Temporary Financial Assistance grant program and our department service officer training. Register for the challenge here.
Members of the Department of Ohio American Legion Family already have taken part in a USA 250 Challenge walk. And now., we’re asking for any Legion Family members taking part in the challenge – whether as an individual or as part of a team – to share with us your effort. If you’re taking part in a team effort and are planning a future event to promote the USA 250 Challenge, please email sbrooks@legion.org. We may try to cover your effort via our national media channels.
If you’re taking part in the USA 250 Challenge, you can share your plans and progress in a special section set up on Legiontown. You can also share your story and photos on social media using the hashtag #USA250Challenge.
And when you share your story, please include your why: Why are you taking part in the challenge? What is it about the USA 250 Challenge that made you want to participate? We want to know.
