Detweiler appointed to Louisiana VA Commission

American Legion Past National Commander William Detweiler has been appointed to the Louisiana Veterans’ Affairs Commission by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. The Veterans’ Affairs Commission serves to advise the Louisiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs and the governor on matters relating to the welfare of veterans.

The commission is comprised of nine gubernatorial appointments, subject to senate confirmation. Each member must be an honorably discharged veteran nominated by a nationally chartered veterans organization with a Louisiana affiliate. Detweiler will be appointed to serve as a representative of The American Legion

"Being appointed to the Louisiana Veterans’ Affairs Commission by Gov. Bobby Jindal is a real honor and an expression of his belief that I can contribute in some way to the betterment of the veterans of our state," Detweiler said. "I look forward to discussing issues that are of importance to our veterans and making recommendations to the Louisiana Secretary of Veterans Affairs to better serve our veterans – particularly those with service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Additionally membership on the commission will give me the opportunity to serve as a liaison between the commission, and the director and her staff of the new Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System medical center currently being built in New Orleans."

Detweiler, who served as national commander of the Legion from 1994-1995, is the owner of a private practice law firm in New Orleans.
