A town hall meeting will be held Dec. 6 in Honolulu; Legion members and staff will attend events commemorating the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The American Legion will have a strong presence in Hawaii during the week commemorating the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor survivors and other World War II veterans, including members of The American Legion, will be among those honored during the weeklong ceremonies. Additionally, volunteers and headquarters staff will be assisting veterans with their benefits claims and holding a town hall meeting related to care at Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities.

American Legion representatives from the Department of Hawaii and the headquarters office in Washington, D.C., will conduct a town hall meeting Dec. 6 in Honolulu. National Commander Charles E. Schmidt will also be in attendance. The open forum discussion at the Oahu Veterans Center, 1299 Kukila St., Honolulu, will give veterans and their family members an opportunity to discuss their experiences with VA.

The town hall will begin at 8:30 a.m. The event is one of about a dozen hosted by The American Legion in the United States this year. The Legion hosts these events to hear feedback from veterans regarding the quality of services provided by VA facilities.

The American Legion will hold a Veterans Benefit Center (VBC) immediately following the meeting and help veterans, caregivers and their dependents expedite disability claims and appeals, and address other health-care concerns.

The VA will accept claims-related evidence for processing, provide claim status updates and disseminate information regarding available services. Those who wish to receive claim-specific information should bring any available case documentation, military and civilian medical records, and a DD-214. American Legion service officers, representatives from VA, and other health-care representatives will be on hand to provide assistance until 5 p.m.

Also on Dec. 6, American Legion volunteers and staff members will hold a System Worth Saving (SWS) visit at the Oahu Veterans Center. The Legion conducts around 10 SWS visits annually to focus to discuss veterans care with hospital staff.

On Dec. 7, Schmidt and members from the Department of Hawaii will participate in the parade commemorating Pearl Harbor.
