Multiple Office Depot/Office Max stores in Houston area teaming up with Legion Family Nov. 9-11 to collect books, Christmas drawings for local veterans; local Legion posts encouraged to participate by manning membership tables at locations.

What started off as a potential local collaboration to benefit area veterans has grown considerably in Texas.

Samatha Sanders, the service-sales manager at an Office Depot store in Houston reached out to the local American Legion Post 560 about teaming up in one of the post’s veterans projects. When Sanders learned about the Department of Texas District 8’s Books for Vets program – which collects and then provides books to patients at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center – she not only organized the event for her store, but also reached out to her district manager about possibly expanding the program.

Since then, 17 more stores have gotten on board and will put up Books for Vets tables Nov. 9-11. American Legion posts near one of the participating stores (see below) are encouraged to contact Office Depot/Office Max to coordinate setting up a Legion Family membership table next to the book drive display.

Also during the book drive and through Dec. 15, the participating stores will spread the word about Post 560’s Operation Holiday Joy program. The post provides drawings of holiday scenes and provides them to children to color and write a message; the drawings are then given out to veterans at the Michael E. DeBakey VAMC.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 560 Catherine Mondy-Boyce said Post 560’s Legion Family has made copies of all their drawings, which will be distributed among area Office Depot/Office Max stores to allow children to color them.

Office Max/Office Depot is a supporter of The American Legion and provides members up to 80 percent off various items. Click here for more details.

The following are a list of all the stores slated to take part in the book drive. Any American Legion posts interested in manning a book at the story during the drive are encouraged to contact Sanders at (713) 956-6064.
