VA awards $16 million in grants for adaptive sports programs

Programs include archery, hunting, fishing, skiing and other activities to assist veterans in rehabilitation efforts.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced today $16 million in new grants to 91 community-based organizations across the country that provide adaptive sports programs for veterans and servicemembers with disabilities.

Adaptive sports programs give veterans opportunities to build independence, well-being, and quality of life through a variety of competitive and recreational activities. These activities – such as archery, hunting, fishing, skiing, cycling, various wheelchair sports, and many others – enable veterans to rehabilitate through recreation and encourage an active and healthy lifestyle.

“Adaptive sports provide veterans important opportunities to showcase their incredible resilience while improving their physical health and mobility,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “These grants will help thousands of veterans across the country create meaningful connections through recreation and competition.”

VA has awarded more than $150 million to expand access to adaptive sports nationwide since the establishment of the Adaptive Sports Grant Program.
