National Service Dog Day falls on Sept. 20 and is designed to honor the role of service dogs in the lives of people with disabilities and America's veterans. The day was designated by Congress in 2023 and is part of September’s National Service Dog Month.
We asked you to share how your service dog has impacted your life, so we can share your story with others. We will continue to publish those stories throughout September.

Our latest in the series is from Vietnam veteran Carl Cieslikowski, who is 100-percent disabled. He shares how his service dog Valentine has “saved” his life.”
Valentine is my service dog. He is 6 years young and he was trained by America’s VetDogs – the same organization from which President Bush was awarded his service canine, Sully. Valentine had two years of training before we were introduced at America’s VetDogs in New York.
Valentine has saved my life – from that of despair to one of hope. He is my friend, companion and he gives me unfathomable comfort. He gives me life without borders and provides comfort when there is none.
He is loyal, funny and a true friend. He lessens my discomfort and makes this life worthwhile. My existence would not be complete without his unwavering support. He allows me to engage with others, supports me unconditionally and he understands my frailties.
