Vietnam War Air Force veteran’s dog helps him both physically and mentally.
National Service Dog Day was Sept. 20 and is designed to honor the role of service dogs in the lives of people with disabilities and America's veterans. The day was designated by Congress in 2023 and is part of September’s National Service Dog Month.
We asked you to share how your service dog has impacted your life, so we can share your story with others. We will continue to publish those stories throughout September.

Our latest in the series is provided by Gracie Jones on behalf of her grandfather, Vietnam War Air Force veteran Donnie Taylor.
My name is Donnie Taylor. I served in the 3SPSK9 at Bien Hoa, May 1969-December 1970. This is my personal service dog, Chien. I personally trained him to assist me with balance, since I am prone to falling and need aid for that. He is capable of keeping a taut leash at all times so I can do a short daily walk in my yard.
He is also trained by me on personal protection. He does not go out in public. I appreciate my dog, as he helps me not only physically, but also mentally. I hope this story reaches out to many.
