National Service Dog Day falls on Sept. 20 and is designed to honor the role of service dogs in the lives of people with disabilities and America's veterans. The day was designated by Congress in 2023 and is part of September’s National Service Dog Month.

Our third in the series is from U.S. Marine Corps veteran Stephen Bastien, who shares how Champ has helped him manage his anxiety and PTSD.
When I was first matched with Champ through America’s VetDogs, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew service dogs were highly trained and capable of incredible things, but nothing could prepare me for the moment I met the dog who would truly change my life.
Champ entered my world with a wagging tail and a calm, steady presence. From the very beginning, he seemed to understand me – not just my routines, but my challenges, my moods, and even the things I tried to keep hidden. He wasn’t just trained to help me; he was meant to walk this path with me.
One of the biggest ways Champ has changed my life is how he helps me manage my PTSD and anxiety. He senses my stress before I even realize it myself. When the world feels overwhelming, Champ leans in, grounding me with his weight and presence. When anxiety starts to creep in, he nudges me back to focus, reminding me that I’m safe and not alone. Nights that once felt endless and heavy are now filled with comfort, because Champ is there, watching over me.
Every day, he shows me the true meaning of partnership. He steadies me when I feel uncertain, guides me when I lose direction, and brings peace when my mind feels anything but calm. With Champ by my side, ordinary days feel manageable, and difficult days become a little easier to face.
What amazes me most is how he carries himself with quiet confidence, loyalty and an unconditional love that never wavers. Champ gives me independence, but even more than that, he gives me confidence. When we walk into a room together, I no longer feel alone.
Thanks to America’s VetDogs, I was given more than a service dog. I was given a partner, a protector, and a best friend. Champ isn’t just my dog; he’s my teammate in life. And every time I look into his eyes, I know I’ve been given the greatest gift: the chance to live more fully, with Champ by my side.
