U.S. Air Force veteran’s service dog has made ‘profound impact’ on his life.
National Service Dog Day was on Sept. 20 and is designed to honor the role of service dogs in the lives of people with disabilities and America's veterans. The day was designated by Congress in 2023 and is part of September’s National Service Dog Month.

Our latest in the series is from U.S. Air Force veteran Todd Marral, who talks about the profound impact on his life made by his service dog Dave.
I am writing to explain the important and meaningful role my golden retriever service dog, Dave, plays in my daily life and in helping me manage symptoms related to PTSD and anxiety.
Dave provides me with essential support that helps me feel safer, calmer, and more secure in situations that can otherwise be overwhelming. His presence helps reduce my anxiety and provides a sense of stability when I am experiencing stress or symptoms associated with PTSD.
Dave is trained to recognize and respond to signs that I am becoming anxious or distressed. His assistance can help interrupt escalating anxiety, provide grounding and reassurance, and help me regain my ability to remain calm and focused. Having Dave with me also gives me confidence to participate in everyday activities that might otherwise be difficult because of my PTSD and anxiety.
Beyond his specific tasks, Dave provides an important sense of companionship, consistency, and security. Knowing that he is with me can make a significant difference in my ability to navigate stressful environments and situations. He is not simply a pet; he is an integral part of my ability to function and cope with my symptoms.
Dave's support has had a profoundly positive impact on my quality of life. His assistance helps me manage my symptoms and maintain greater independence, stability, and participation in daily activities.
I sincerely appreciate your consideration of the important role Dave plays in my life and the support he provides to me as my service dog.
