April conference brings together more than 60 organizations that participate in VA Volunteer Service.
On Wednesday, Jacob B. Gadd, American Legion assistant director for Program Management, attended a breakfast reception with Laura Balun, director of VA Voluntary Service, and Colonel Charles Gallina, National VA Voluntary Service (VAVS) representative with Knights of Columbus.
The meeting was to discuss VA's upcoming VAVS National Advisory Committee Conference in Cincinnati April 7-9. The conference is comprised of representatives from more than 60 organizations that volunteer for the VAVS program. The VAVS program is the largest volunteer program in federal government, providing more than 60 years of voluntary service to veterans in VA medical centers, Vet Centers, clinics, state veterans homes and Fisher Houses.
The primary objective of the conference is to advise VA and those member organizations on how to coordinate volunteerism and promote volunteer activities within VA facilities. In fiscal 2009, VA Voluntary Service had 89,142 total volunteers that served 11,874,478 hours. Of these numbers, The American Legion contributed 6,307 volunteers with 916,598 hours.
