Legionnaires can help smooth out election-season tension in months ahead.
The 2020 General Election ballots have been cast, and regardless who won offices, what results are being scrutinized or recounted, what propositions or referendums passed or failed, or bond levies were approved or rejected, American Legion National Commander James W. “Bill” Oxford reminds members of the nation’s largest organization of wartime veterans to serve as ambassadors of civility in the months ahead.
“Like many elections of the past, this one had its share of heated exchanges between candidates and sharp debates among supporters and opponents of one position or another,” Oxford said, wrapping up the American Legion’s Veteran Votes Count campaign for 2020. “Now is the time for peaceful transitions and, no matter who won office, to advance the legislative priorities of The American Legion – to improve and enhance the lives of our nation’s veterans, military personnel and their families.”
Oxford added his gratitude to American Legion members and posts who were able to combine their Buddy Check and Get Out the Vote programs to help veterans understand this year’s election process, which was complicated by the pandemic, and help veterans participate.
American Legion posts and members are urged to share their stories of Buddy Check outreach and action during the election at legion.org/legiontown, using the “Veterans Helping Veterans” category. The platform is easy to use and, once posted and reviewed, materials can be conveniently shared through social media.
