From April 2019 through Jan. 2020, OUR VETERANS book has been a patriotic awareness project by The Leader newspaper. It showcases many Legionnaires of our Garden Oaks Post 560 in Houston, Texas as well as veteran neighbors and/or deceased veteran neighbors from WWI forward. Pictures or stories were submitted by their kin. https://theleadernews.com/help-us-preserve-the-lore-of-our-areas-veterans/ We hosted a scanning party in July to help the newspaper collect the information.

We hosted a scanning party in July to help the newspaper collect the information. https://theleadernews.com/bring-your-vet-photos-to-leader-scan-day/

Veterans could also drop by the newspaper office with their information, too. https://theleadernews.com/our-veterans-will-be-remembered-like-never-bef...

After the book release, our Post hosted an autograph party on Dec. 7, 2019 for the veterans, families and community to meet and hear a few stories of military experiences. We also remembered Pearl Harbor Day. https://theleadernews.com/meet-heroes-from-our-veterans-at-book-signing/

The newspaper wrote a follow up story, too. Who knew we had so many veterans in our neighborhood?

From the beginning, the book was advertised with the notation, "A portion of the proceeds will go to Post 560." Recently, several of our officers were on hand to receive a check.

Partially due to the increased public awareness, on Feb. 5, 2020, our Post reached our Department of Texas membership goal of 309. This total includes 31 new members.
