As we lie here together looking up at the summer sky
The river flows, the blossom grows, the swallows fly so high,
A special time, a special place, where our promises were sealed
Some might say it was our hide-away, but we just knew it as our field.
Those simple things like the flowers I picked for you, at first you didn’t care,
You laughed so much when they blew in the breeze, as I tried to slide them in your hair,
We weren’t to know we were falling in love, that’s the way love makes you feel,
A timeless, endless, desire that we can’t let go………it was our Xanadu… our field
When you swam naked in the river that day, you told me to close my eyes,
But I could only stare at your voluptuous curves, our passions ran so high
We made love again and again, you said I took you to another place
Then we’d stare at a moonlit sky, before another passionate embrace
The summer goes as autumn blows, you know I have to go
My darling dear, don’t shed a tear, I’ll be back before you know,
We kiss goodbye, you start to cry………….please ……let’s not part this way,
Try to be strong, it’s not for long, just recall our summer days
As I lie here in this field , looking up at the summer sky,
No blossom growing, no breeze blowing, where swallows used to fly
Just the stench of death, last gasps of breath, of young men cut down in their prime.
Some scream for their mothers, some for their sweethearts, it’s only a matter of time.
One by one their voices fall silent, what a price we have to pay
For King and Country, a noble cause, but it wasn’t meant to end this way
A grey, eerie landscape of smoke, barbed wire and mud
I try to stem my bleeding, but I’m surrounded by pools of blood
If I close my eyes I see our field, where the river flows so well,
Carefree lovers walking hand in hand, far away from these bowels of hell
I can’t stand the pain in this field of slain, so I imagine your beautiful smile
I run my fingers through your hair, it brings me comfort for a while
Our field of happiness, our field of hope, our field of love, our field of dreams,
But sometimes life takes a cruel turn, as if to punish us, it seems
I start to drift , the pain has gone, I can’t tell if it’s day or night,
My final words……you know I love you….. but there’s one more thing I have to write.......
- Your Words
